A wave of attacks and strikes has left a trail of destruction across Ukraine and Russia, sparking a heated debate over the impact and response.
The Strike's Impact on Resident Doctors' Pay:
The British Medical Association (BMA) has initiated a five-day strike in England, with resident doctors (previously junior doctors) at the forefront. Dr. Tom Dolphin, BMA Council chair, revealed that their pay has decreased by a fifth compared to 2008. This claim is based on adjusting resident doctors' salaries for inflation using the Retail Prices Index (RPI), which typically shows higher price increases than the more commonly used Consumer Prices Index (CPI).
But here's where it gets controversial: RPI lost its status as a national statistic in 2013 due to calculation issues. When measured with CPI, resident doctors' pay is only 7% lower than in 2008. Since 2023, their pay has increased by 28.9%, with a 5.4% offer for the current financial year.
Russian Strikes in Kyiv and Novorossiysk:
Russian drone and missile strikes on Kyiv have resulted in at least four deaths and numerous injuries, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Verified images and videos show the aftermath, including an apartment block with blown-out windows and a high-rise building with smoke rising from the roof. Reverse image searches confirm the authenticity of these visuals.
In Novorossiysk, a Russian port city, large explosions were reported after a Ukrainian attack. BBC Verify and BBC Monitoring have verified videos and photos of the blasts, geolocating them using street-level mapping tools. The Krasnodar regional governor reported drone impacts, with debris damaging residential buildings and injuring civilians.
The Ukrainian Response and the Debate:
Ukraine has not officially commented on the strikes in Novorossiysk, but Russia's Defense Ministry claims to have intercepted and destroyed numerous Ukrainian drones. Meanwhile, the BMA's strike continues, with the government and the association disagreeing on the extent of the pay decrease. And this is the part most people miss: the debate over inflation metrics adds complexity to the discussion.
What do you think? Should the BMA's strike be a wake-up call for fairer pay, or is the government's response adequate? And how should Ukraine respond to the reported strikes on Russian territory? Share your thoughts and keep the conversation going!
